King Tran Thai Tong

In the last years of the Ly Dynasty, all of the important positions in the Court were held by the Trans.

Lady Tran Thi Dung  was the Queen.

General Tran Thu Do was the Prime Minister.

General Tran Thua was the highestranking mandarin.

Finally, Tran Canh, a son of Tran Thua, became the first Tran king after his wife, Queen Ly Chieu Hoang transfered the throne to him.

Tran Canh , was called King Tran Thai Tong, and his wife became Queen Ly Chieu Thanh. His father, Tran Thua, became known as the King Father.

As the king was too young to govern, Tran Thu Do and Tran Thi Dung took control of all Court affairs. But the couple did not stop at governing matters of state.

In 1237, Tran Thu Do forced King Tran Thai Tong to divorce Queen Ly Chieu Hoang, citing he childlessness after 12 years marriage, and marry her elder sister, Princess Thuan Thien, who was three months pregnant.

This prompted Thuan Thien’s husband, General Tran Lieu,to lead his troops in a rebellion in Thang Long capital.

Angry about Tran Thu Do’s action, King Tran Thai Tong left Thang Long for Yen Tu pagoda. Tran Thu Do immediately went to the pagoda and persuaded the king to come back to Thang Long.

In 1258, Mongol-Yuan aggressors launched a sudden attack and seized Lang Son fortress.

At the same time, another column of Mongol troops marched from the Yuannan Province of China into Dai Viet and onto Thang Long. Tran Thu Do and Tran Thi Dung led the Royal Family and the people of Thang Long out of the capital,to Thanh Hoa.

But the invaders were soon made ill by the unfavourable climatic conditions and the Viets took the opportunity to attack from Dong Bo Dau port. The Mongol-Yuan were surprised and, eventually, force to withdraw  from Thang Long.

The Viets followed the enemy and killed every one of them .

On 1 April 1277,Tran Thai Tong died, at the age of 60, after 33 years as King and a9 years as King Father after the Crown Prince, Tran Hoang, ascended the throne
