Sofitel Metropole Hanoi: Traveler Reviews

Lovely Historic Hotel by portiab - tripadvisor.com
This is the place to stay in Hanoi. We are happy that we chose the Historic over the modern wing. The original building is beautiful. We were there 3 nights and on our first night the room was small with no view. We complained and were moved to a much larger room (#106) facing the front of the hotel with a large tub and separate shower. Comfortable linens and bed. The hallways are lovely--very wide with tables and lamps. You can take a cyclo tour of the old quarter right from the hotel door. I was surprised how large the hotel was with the 2 wings. Food at the hotel was pricey (for Vietnam) and not particularly interesting compared with the rest of Hanoi but there are many options close by. The pool looked smallish. Wifi costs extra and is not available in the rooms.

Classic setting, but mixed service - tripadvisor.com
I had high expectations, many friends had said that it was a spectacular hotel with flawless service. The hotel is very pretty, but it feels a little overwhelmed by the number of guests using the facility. The main lobby is quite small & quickly fills up & becomes difficult to use. The staff is very uneven. The front desk staff wasn't always helpful or gracious. The dining room couldn't accommodate the breakfast rush, so I had to eat a subpar meal that was hastily set up in the bar. During the day, there are some gorgeous (& pricey) buffets, some of the prettiest I've ever seen. Stayed in deluxe rooms in both the historic & opera wings (2 separate stays). Both are quite special: historical wing is an updated piece of history, but opera wing offers more space, more light & sybaritic bathrooms (loved the freestanding tub, very decadent). Stayed on the Club Floor, but was quite confused by their system. I had access to the club lounge, but had to pay extra for food/drink (apparently there are different room rates & mine didn't include the extras...) Location is very convenient & easy to access. Would definitely stay again, but don't consider it a top hotel experience.

Excellent by Yankee_and_Noggster - tripadvisor.com
Great hotel, with somewhat of a history. We booked on hotels.com and got it for USD 150 per night. They really really tried to get us to upgrade to new part and take a room in the club area. We opted out and stayed in the old wing. So should you. This is really nice and classic. Great bar by the pool. Perfect hotel, but you also pay for it in terms of drink prices.

Colonial Luxury - tripadvisor.com
Compared to the other 5star hotels in hanoi it is expensive but you are warped back into the early beginning of 20th century colonial luxury with 21st century amenities and comfort. I have now been here over 10 times since the mid nineties and surely i would be able to complain abt this or that but in all fariness it is one of the very few large hotels i know where you feel in a cocoon of well being and a very nice atmosphere. They somehow captured and married the french colonial past and the old vietnamese imperial style. It is on my list of top 10 hotels in the world. If you travel with children ask a room facing the pool on the first or second floor in the historical wing. The extra bed is mostly put in the dressing room area which the kids just love as it is a bit seperate and cosy. A cocktail at the bamboo bar and the bbq or buffet menu at spices garden.

If there is something to improve the management should find an early check-in solution, as whether you are in Hanoi for business or pleasure, all intercontinental flights get there in the early mornings and the first thing you want to do is have a shower and a rest and that can be a problem at the Metropole. I would be happy to pay a little extra for such a service.

Real 5 star luxury. Feels like you are in Europe! - tripadvisor.com

The Metropole is the most luxurious place I've ever stayed in Asia. There is so much hustle and bustle in Hanoi, and once you step inside the Metropole it all fades away. The service was unobtrusive but top notch, the food was delicious (although very expensive!!), the rooms were well appointed and the bed was so comfortable I wanted to take it home with me. My husband likes a harder mattress so he found it too squishy but I was in heaven.

I did arrive in Hanoi suffering from food poisoning from a bug I picked up in Hoi An, so the first 24 hours at the hotel was spent in the marble bathroom... but I was glad I was sick in a nice place and not a dump. Once I was able to start eating again I enjoyed the breakfast as well as tea time and the chocolate buffet. Nothing at this hotel is affordable, but it is certainly cheaper than its counterparts anywhere else in the world. This hotel was ~$250/night but in the US or Europe it would have been 3-4 times as expensive.

I enjoyed this hotel so much that we canceled some of our sightseeing activities so we could lounge by the pool on our last day!

My one complaint - at such a high end hotel they should not charge for internet - the prices were ridiculous!

Not as good as they think they are - quite disappointing service - tripadvisor.com
We’d read the great reviews here and based on the hotels’ reputation, booked a couple of nights in the Metropole Opera Wing. The check in was very efficient and the hotel arranged to obtain some train tickets from the travel agency based at their sister hotel in Hanoi that we’d booked online. Within a couple of hours they were delivered to our room.

The hotel has a charming colonial feel, very similar to Raffles Hotel in Singapore and we had lunch at the poolside. Service was very slow and ketchup we twice asked for was brought to the table 20 minutes later after we’d already finished the food. The staff always seemed distracted by other tasks and even mid conversation with you would allow another staff member to interrupt them. In the main bar we experienced the same as well as some clumsiness as a glass was dropped and broken and staff seemed to trip over each other behind the counter.

It appears though the main bar serves other outlets in the hotel which probably accounts for the very slow drinks service we experienced in the third outlet we tried, the streetside “La Terrasse” café. Literature in the room mentioned an April Steak Frites promotion but the waitress didn’t know what we were talking about which was surprising as when we left, we walked past a blackboard on the pavement promoting exactly that. Waiting service is a complete let down for this hotel, so much so we have written a letter of complaint, something we rarely do, but if the hotel promotes itself as the top end of the market then all aspects need to deliver. From our experience a very visible maitre D is the key to an efficiently run restaurant but managing staff weren’t very apparent at the Metropole.

The hotel should also better control use of the pool. For both days the pool was occupied by children running wild without parental control in sight. Unfortunately these offspring (and there were at least 10 of them) are probably spoilt at home and took over the pool as their playground disturbing the relaxing surroundings for all the other guests. The staff didn’t appear to care but smiles all round from other guests when I went and asked one particularly loud brat to control the volume of his vocal chords.

Hotels often stipulate dress codes to preserve ambience. The Metropole should be concerned that areas of the hotel are not used as playgrounds by bored kids.

One important note when choosing a Hanoi hotel based on Tripadvisor recommendations is that many of the highly rated hotels certainly have plenty of excellent views but most of these are from users who have only posted a single review and whose command of English does not match their country of origin in their profile. I suspect there is widespread manipulation of reviews for the smaller hotels as Vietnam could be called “Net Nam” with the widespread availability of broadband internet cafes. Our guess is that there is an army of Vietnamese praising their friend’s hotels and restaurants in the country.

A must see in Hanoi - tripadvisor.com
Sofitel beeing part of Asia Miles we used a voucher there and it was a great experience in Hanoi. The staff is very helpful and with a good tip they can arrange almost anything. The rooms are well equipped and perfectly clean. Our room had a view on the swimming pool and the atmosphere is very nice.

Would be guests, Lower your expectations - tripadvisor.com
Check in: When it comes to giving the appearance, they do it very well: the hotel housed in a fine example of period architecture, the lobby and the other common areas , the livery and the butler service, etc. all deserving of their claim of representing the grand elegance of the colonial times. But underneath the glitter its claim to the highest standard of hospitality, its quality of service as a 5-star hotel, is rather unconvincing. Example: on our arrival we were greeted by the assigned butler who completed the check in formalities for us while we waited in the lobby. Then again, we were assigned a smoking room on the assumption that we would not care. We did eventually get a suitable room though not before a round of unpacking and packing. With proper attention to details, we thought, this inconvenience could very well have been prevented.

Room: Spacious, comfortable, and very nicely appointed. The housekeeping did an excellent job and it showed everyday without fail in every detail and deserves a five-star rating. The Opera Wing, the location of our room, on the other hand, was a disappointing misnomer. The fine silk curtains instead of complementing a grand view of the famous opera house across the street served the opposite purpose of hiding a partially demolished and an eye-sore of a structure adjacent to the hotel building. It became somewhat tiresome not to be able to look outside for four days of our stay.

Breakfast at Spice Garden (2 out of 4 days): For breakfast, two of us were seated by the entrance to the patio at a large table with four standard and one high chair while a table for two adjacent to the garden went begging at least till the time we left. The food itself we hoped would pick us up from these minor (one may call them major by five star standard) lapses in service quality. Then again, it was not so. Flies were on the fruit trays and there were no lids to cover them and the quality of the bakery items average, and the shrunk dumplings looked rather left over. By contrast the quality of food at the club level was much better though everyday the choices were the same.

Concierge service: Very average. We needed help finding a small street not on the hotel-issued map. I handed a slip of paper with the name of the street and the map to the concierge on duty asking her if I had overlooked the street and if she could help me locate it. A few annoyed squints later she looked up and declared that it was too small to be marked on the map and wanted to disengage. I then suggested if she could search for it on Google. Instead of embracing the idea in a why-did-not-I-think-of-it-myself way, she issued a rather startling holler at her colleague 5-feet away who then began to search for the street using the regular Google instead of the Google map. As he was struggling to produce a result I offered to help and together we soon found the street on the map.

Unfavorable last impression: Last day of our stay as we were walking past Metrople's sidewalk cafe, La Terrasse, , we came across a staff picking up a glass while she was setting up tables and inserting her bare finger to scrape the bottom apparently to remove a spot.

Management: Sent us an invitation to an evening cocktail party, which we were unable to attend. While we welcome their friendly gesture, it would be more meaningful if they addressed the service issues.

I want to go back! - tripadvisor.com
The hotel Metropole was our first stop of our holiday in Vietnam last November. We arrived late (10.30pm) and we were whisked up to the club level as we had booked a club floor room. Check in was smooth and quick. The room itself was gorgeous although i guess some may find the open bathroom design a bit odd, we loved it. The seperate shower was also very good.
The bed was wonderfully comfortable. Breakfast, afternoon tea and Canapes and Cocktails are included in the club rate and all are excellent, with a very good selection. The lounge was never horrendously busy and the service was excellent at all times.
We especially loved having a late night drink in "Le pub" which most nights features a singer and unlike many hotels we have stayed in in the past we were able to get food at 11.30pm on our arrival night in the bar.
We also ate at Angelino's one night, which has a cool bar (this is busy with expats) but again the food and service were very good.
The concierge on both the main floor and the club level were excellent.

We didn't use the pool area and whilst not extensive, the area itself was beautifully presented.
I would say the location is hard to beat and we walked virtually everywhere.

The only slight problem is that as they have two wings, taxi drivers guides etc sometimes come to the wrong wing, but it's no fault of the hotel and i certainly didn't let it bother me. Just make sure you know which wing your are staying in and let people know accordingly
Both my partner and I were reluctant to leave here and we have both said it ranks as one of our favourite hotels ever. We would return to Hanoi just to be able to stay here again (although we actually really liked Hanoi also) A MUST stay in Hanoi and if you can, go for the club experience.

Beautiful hotel but does not represent value for money - tripadvisor.com
This hotel whilst beautiful and full of charm this hotel is expensive. It is located a llittle way away from the hustel and bustel of the Old Quarter which has to be one of Hanoi' top attractions. I have also received better service in other Hanoi hotels.

Elegant, old world charm - tripadvisor.com
Our family of four (children 8 and 12) stayed here for 2 nights. We were given a room in the old wing. It was massive, more than enough room to fit an extra cot. The linens were of superb quality, the bathroom included a shower and large tub and had a flat-screen television. We had a number of meals in the hotel restaurants and were pleasantly surpised with the value. The pool was outdoors in the middle of a courtyard and was thoroughly enjoyed by the children both in the day and evening. There were surprisingly quite a few families here which the hotel seemed to welcome. The breakfast was superb, each morning accompanied with a pot of freshly brewed coffee. Overall, the accomodation, location and service were superior. The entire experience was incredible.

Great oasis in a noisy and dirty city - tripadvisor.com
The Sofitel Metropole is really a beautiful place to stay while in Hanoi. The colonial style is stunning. Rooms are very quiet, clean and nicely decorated and we felt like being far away from the noise of the city. We appreciated the breakfast and buffets. The staff is very friendly though it is sometimes difficult to communicate (Language issues). To be highly recommanded.

A lot of restaurants but bad service - tripadvisor.com
They had a lot of places to eat but there service lacked. It took someone 30 minutes to come to my room to collect my bags. Its also big. Almost like a resort but I wouldn't recommend it because of the terrible service.

great hotel in excellent location - tripadvisor.com
The Sofitel Metropole is a great hotel in an excellent location in Hanoi, within walking distance of the lake and the backpacker areas. The rooms were very clean and cosy. The concierge and reception staff were very helfpul and assisted in booking restaurants etc. The hotel is very busy and quite formal as you would expect of such an estemed hotel. The staff endeavour to anticipate the guests requirements and small touches like the daily newspaper and chocolate on your pillow in the evening all serve to ensure that you feel that the 5 star rating is warranted.

Gorgeous Rooms and Service to Match - tripadvisor.com
I loved my Opera Wing premium room, with its wood floors, stylish contemporary decor with a sense of place and spacious bathroom. The view wasn't much (be sure to ask for a view of the garden/pool, if a view is important to you), but the service was excellent. The staff always cleaned the room when I was out, and they even took the time to arrange the toiletries on the sink into a pleasing composition. The only time the service let me down was at check-out. I had requested a take-away breakfast box the night before, because of a very early departure. When I checked out, no breakfast box could be found.

Other than that one small snafu, my stay at the Sofitel was a joy. The breakfast that I did have in the Spices Garden restaurant was fantastic. One of the best breakfast buffets I've ever had the fortune to experience.

We did see a room in the historic Metropole Wing, and while that wing does have plenty of period charm, the bathroom of the room we saw was quite small. Avoid the lowest category rooms in the Metropole Wing.

A calm oasis - tripadvisor.com
We stayed for 3 nights in the Sofitel Metropole and feel we definitely made the right choice. Hanoi is a very busy and noisy city and this hotel felt like a calm oasis. It has a lovely swimming pool although it was unfortunately too cold to use it while we were there - beware, the weather in Hanoi is very variable! It's position is ideal for walking to the old town and whilst it is not cheap, you get what you pay for in terms of service etc. We didn't eat there at all in the evening but we had 1 lunch there which proved to be very expensive compared to what you could get in the city. Breakfast however was excellent with a huge choice. I would definitely recommend it as the place to stay, but it's cheaper (and more fun) to eat in the city's restaurants.

GOOD HOTEL- tripadvisor.com
This is the best hotel in HAnoi but... The service in the business centre is LOW. I ordered something to eat in the business centre and it take long. AFterwards nobody came to clean up, even after I talked to the cleaning personnel and the person in charge in the business centre. MAybe because I am a vietnamese and they tend not to serve. It is not okay for a hotel of this class.

Colonial Character in Good Location - tripadvisor.com
The Metropole is a large hotel with a slightly complicated floor plan that takes some getting used to. There are bedrooms on three sides of a central courtyard which houses a bar, a pool, a spa and boutiques. This inner courtyard area can be a quiet oasis, close to the sights of Hanoi, but away from the hustle and bustle of the streets.

As suggested by previous reviewers, the bedrooms in the old wing have more character. The bedrooms are, in fact, the key differentiator of this hotel and have been (as is often the case with Sofitel) tastefully upgraded without a lavish increase in the nightly room rate. The Metropole is good value in its price range. The bedroom decor comprises dark wooden floors and furniture against a backdrop of white walls. There is a genuine old colonial feel to the rooms. At the same time, the electronics and bathroom fixtures are entirely modern. There was no walk-in shower in my room but at least the bathtub came with an overhead rain shower rather than the wall-mounted variety.

Breakfast buffet is average, nothing special, for this level of hotel. As stated by others, hanoi offers a plethora of fine, inexpensive restaurants. Unless you are exhausted, there is no reason, gastronomic or financial, to eat at any of the hotel restaurants.

In my experience, the service at this hotel is of reasonbable quality but variable from one staff member to another. A better business hotel in Hanoi is the Sheraton where service standards are very high, but the Sheraton is far less conveniently located for tourism purposes than the Metropole.

Over priced, French restaurant quotes in VND and charges in $USA confusing - tripadvisor.com
We stayed at the Soffitel for our friends 35th wedding anniversary for 2 nights, beautiful place with a price to match which was fine but we went to dinner at the french restaurant for dinner the place is very dimmly lit and all prices were quoted in VND$ on the menu. We had roughly worked out the meal price in our heads as we had the set menu. When bill came it seems correct to what we expected in VND$. We split bill half on each room but didnt work out til later when I checked their bill with mine that we were both charged for the meal but we had already left Hanoi. I rang them and they said it was correct and I went through with them again what we had and they said that the wine was $100 USA a bottle, my partner ordered the wine knowing that it is only a $20 AUS bottle at most in Australia and he said he didnt believe that on the menu it was that much. I advise that the total price on the bill was only half the amount charged they said that alot of people get confused with that because they quote in $VND on menu and charge you in $USA on bill at the bottom?????????? But on the positive side the Vietnamese restaurant at the hotel was wonderful and the beds just the best we slept on so far and we are in Vietnam for 30 days and half way through so far.

A truly lovely hotel with the charm and levels of service you'd expect - tripadvisor.com
We stayed in the here for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. This probably the best hotel in Hanoi, if not Vietnam and I am always slightly bemused to see top world class hotels like this somewhat down the list of hotels in TA. The staff were without exception lovely and our room in the Historical Wing was as described, a bit small but wonderfully atmospheric and stylish. The only thing I’ll say is that these rooms either overlook a busy street or a busy park. This sort of activity doesn’t bother me too much, but if it is likely to annoy you or keep you awake then I recommend you book the Opera wing.

Two words: Chocolate Buffet - tripadvisor.com

If you have the money to afford it, you already know if you'll like the Metropole as a hotel. But I'm writing of High Tea and the Chocolate Buffet at Le Beaulieu restaurant, because the Metropole website doesn't mention it anymore, and I had trouble finding current information. As of this writing, in March, 2010, these are offered daily from 3:00 to 5:30. Reservations have not been required when we visited. Prices are higher on weekends. High Tea is roughly $19 US on weekdays. You get tea or coffee and a tray of little sandwiches, fruit, and desserts. Delicious! The chocolate buffet is about the same price. For that, you can help yourself to all kinds of delicacies: mousse, truffles, spring rolls, ice cream, squares, cakes - all chocolate! Add a chocolate fountain and made-to-order hot chocolate - the best I've ever had! You don't get any beverages with the chocolate buffet, other than the hot chocolate. And adding coffee or tea is very pricey. The solution? Combine the High Tea and Chocolate Buffet for the bargain price of around $26 US! Bring your appetite and don't expect to eat dinner afterward. Many items on the Metropole menu are very expensive. These two things are very high quality and very good value for these prices. Highly recommended! We are returning to do it once more before we leave Hanoi.

HANOI SOFITEL METROPOLE HOTEL Superb - tripadvisor.com

We loved our few days here, a real sanctuary from the bustle of Hanoi, you could walk to the old town and the lake easily from the hotel. Staff were lovely and the beds were amazingly comfortable, perfect after 15 hours flying. We ate in the Asian restaurant Spice and in the Orangery, both were super, both food and service. Loved the pool area for relaxing after sightseeing, especially enjoyed the complimentary coconut ice cream round the pool! A really nice touch.
Beautiful hotel, would love to return soon.

Absolutely one of the best hotels in Asia - tripadvisor.com
Asian hotels are known for their hospitality and this one is at the top of the list! Hanoi is a non-stop city and walking into Metropole is comfort from the busy streets and city outside it's doors. The Hotel has been exquisitely restored. We recommend a room in the old section. We can't wait to come back to Hanoi for the hotel alone. The staff attends to every need with complete enthusiasm. We did eat at both the French and Italian restaurants in the hotel. The French restaurant was good, not great and we were not impressed with the Italian restaurant, but we only ate within the hotel to accommodate guests. In a city like Hanoi, there is some much great dinning in local restaurants. We would not stay anywhere else in Hanoi!!!

Excellent - tripadvisor.com
Stayed here for 3 days to attend a friends party. Very charming beautiful hotel, wonderful food and walking distance to the local shops/markets. We stayed in the new section, comfortable beds and well appointed. One downside: We went to the pool area, we sat down on the only 2 banana chairs free, a staff member came and told us we must leave as the people were eating lunch at the tables. Also told by staff on check out they would ring a 'cheap' taxi, it turned out more expensive than the trip from the airport. Staff were very good other than these 2 incidents.

Have things changed? - tripadvisor.com
We've stayed at the Sofitel Metropole more than once and have never encountered poor service, peope unable to speak English, bell boys charging ahead into the elevators. Yes, service in the Bamboo Bar has always been slow...Angelina must be a new name for the restaurant near reception and perhaps a new chef has taken it down a notch. We always had great food and superb service. I hope we won't be diappointed when we return this year.

Perfect for Us - tripadvisor.com
Arriving in Hanoi after a somewhat long (and sometime dreary) ride from Halong Bay, it was such a relief when we got to the Metropole. From the moment our car door was opened to the last goodbye, all the hotel and restaurant staff we encountered during our stay were cordial, helpful, and efficient. A reliable place of refuge and relaxation, which was what we needed.

We had reserved in the historic section and as requested were assigned to the top floor overlooking the courtyard -- very comfortable and quiet accommodations. A separate lounge area with workdesk, sofa, wall-mounted tv, single window, and a vase holding white roses. Bedroom with wardrobe, two silk lounging robes, minibar credenza, tv, double window. Bathroom with soaking tub, shower, single sink, two heavy terrycloth robes. Everything worked, everything in excellent condition.

Simple banh mi, cold beers and cocktails at the Bamboo Bar, accurate and rapid service, not crazy about the heavy wicker armchairs. Pleasant & relaxing outdoor dinner one evening at Spices, memorable banana flower salad. Big splurge on excellent French chocolates from l'Epicerie.

For us, this was a great hotel with great service in a great location.
